BOWTY Expert User Data Policy
Version 1.0 · Last updated in October 2026
This policy explains how BOWTY Expert handles the data you create with it ("Your Data"): bow tie diagrams, hazards, top events, threats, consequences, barriers, supporting controls and degradation factors, risk matrices and risk acceptance decisions, revision history and sign-offs, organisation profiles, report templates and logos, reports and exports.
1. Ownership
Your Data belongs to you (or to your organisation or client, as you have agreed with them). Arborion Global claims no rights in it.
2. Where Your Data is kept
- Bow ties are saved as
.btfiles where you choose to save them: on your computer or in a shared folder, such as a network drive or a synchronised company folder. When a bow tie in a shared folder is open, BOWTY Expert places a small lock file next to it, naming the user and computer, so that colleagues do not overwrite each other's changes. - Revision history (named revisions and sign-offs) is kept inside each
.btfile. - Crash-recovery copies of open bow ties are kept in your user profile on your computer until they are no longer needed.
- Settings, organisation profiles, risk matrices and report templates are kept in your user profile, and can be exported to a file you choose to share them with your team.
- Reports and exports (PDF, Excel, PNG, SVG, JSON and large-format prints) are written where you choose, or sent to the printer you choose.
3. What Arborion Global receives
None of the content of Your Data. BOWTY Expert never sends the content of a bow tie to Arborion Global. Signing in, activation and the licence check send only the items listed in the BOWTY Expert Privacy Statement. Your Arborion account is used only to sign in and apply your licence, never to store or share bow ties.
The only information about a bow tie that is ever sent concerns revision checkpoints: when you sign off a revision while online, BOWTY Expert sends the licensing service the file's identifier, the revision number and a one-way hash of the revision, and the service records them with your account. A hash cannot be turned back into the content.
If you send us a bow tie, report or screenshot for support, we use it only to help you. We keep it confidential and delete it when the support request is closed, unless you ask us to keep it.
4. Integrity and records
BOWTY Expert keeps a hash-chained revision history inside each .bt file, so that a change made to a recorded revision outside BOWTY Expert can be detected. A sign-off made while online is also confirmed by a checkpoint digitally signed by the licensing service, which names the person who signed off and is stored in the file. This protects the record's integrity. It is not encryption: anyone who can open the file can read it.
5. Protecting Your Data
You control access to Your Data. We recommend that you:
- store bow ties on encrypted disks (FileVault on macOS, BitLocker on Windows) or in access-controlled company storage;
- keep regular backups; BOWTY Expert does not back up to any service of ours;
- restrict access to shared folders to the people who work on the bow ties;
- remove bow ties from shared or personal devices when a project ends, in line with your organisation's or client's retention rules.
6. When your licence ends
BOWTY Expert returns to read-only mode: you can still open and view your bow ties, but not save changes or export them. Your files remain yours and stay where they are. .bt files are JSON and can be read without BOWTY Expert.
