Area classification drawings are frequently inherited, rarely re examined, and often wrong after a plant modification. This course teaches classification from source of release upward, covers both the IEC zone system and the North American division system, and addresses equipment selection and the inspection regime that keeps the protection valid.

Every module is taught with worked examples and exercises drawn from real plant, and adapted to your own process where the course runs in house.

Fundamentals

  • Flammable limits, flash point, autoignition and how each drives classification
  • Gas groups, temperature classes and the properties behind them
  • Grade of release from continuous through primary to secondary

Classification method

  • Identifying every source of release rather than the obvious ones
  • Release rate, ventilation availability and dilution
  • Zone 0, 1 and 2 and the equivalent division system
  • Zone extent estimation and the point method
  • Combustible dust classification and the zone 20, 21 and 22 set

Equipment selection

  • Protection concepts including flameproof, increased safety and intrinsic safety
  • Marking, certification and understanding what a certificate covers
  • Cable entry, glanding and the failures found in practice

Keeping classification valid

  • Inspection grades and frequencies
  • Management of change when a source of release is added or moved
  • Common findings from area classification audits
