Responsible Care Element 4, Learning from Experience, is the engine of continuous improvement that converts every incident, every near miss, and every significant deviation into concrete action that stops the same thing happening again. The element lines up with CCPS RBPS Pillar 4 on learning from experience, and it deliberately reaches beyond learning at a single site. It takes in the industry wide sharing of lessons run through ICCA and ACC, the performance benchmarking that ICCA coordinates, and the cross industry incident database that the whole sector draws on. The element asks signatory companies to investigate incidents systematically, to share what they find with peer companies, and to contribute to learning across the industry, and it is this generosity with hard won lessons that distinguishes Responsible Care from a learning system that stays locked inside one company.
