Product Stewardship Programmes and Lifecycle Assessment (LCA)

We deliver ISO 14040, 14044 and 14067 LCA using SimaPro, GaBi and OpenLCA modelling for EPD, CBAM, PCF and Scope 3 disclosure

Programme overview

Product Stewardship Programmes and Lifecycle
Assessment (LCA)

Product lifecycle assessment quantifies environmental impact across raw material extraction, manufacturing, distribution, use and end of life. It generates the product carbon footprint under ISO 14067, environmental product declarations under ISO 14025 and the decision support data your team needs for eco design, substitution and substantiated marketing claims. The discipline has moved from a voluntary differentiator to a mandatory market access tool. EU CBAM transitional reporting has run since October 2023 with the full levy from January 2026 and requires verified embedded emission data for steel, cement, fertiliser, aluminium, hydrogen and electricity. The EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, effective from 2024 with sector specific Digital Product Passports phasing in between 2026 and 2030, mandates LCA derived data for most product categories. The FDA and EFSA increasingly demand environmental fate data, and the Green Claims Directive of 2024 makes a substantiated LCA the only defence against greenwashing prosecution. Our team executes the work in SimaPro, GaBi (now Sphera LCA), OpenLCA or OneClick LCA against established databases such as ecoinvent, GaBi LCI, ELCD and USLCI. We make the attributional and consequential methodology choices explicit, manage allocation transparently and produce studies that are ready for critical review under ISO 14071.

Product Stewardship Programmes and Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) Overview
How we deliver it

Our implementation model

A practical, phased delivery approach that runs from gap assessment through operational embedding and is built around your regulatory context.

Goal & Scope Definition

Define LCA goal and scope per ISO 14040 / 14044, functional unit (e.g., 1 kg product, 1 m² surface for 10 years), system boundary (cradle to gate, cradle to grave, cradle to cradle), allocation methodology (mass, energy, economic).

Life Cycle Inventory (LCI)

Build LCI per ISO 14041, input/output table per life cycle stage (raw material, manufacturing, distribution, use, end of life), collect primary data from site, secondary from databases (ecoinvent, GaBi, ELCD), align with PCR (Product Category Rules).

Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA)

Conduct LCIA per ISO 14042, characterisation (TRACI 2.1, ReCiPe 2016, CML, EF 3.0), normalisation, weighting (optional), calculate impact per category, climate change, ODP, acidification, eutrophication, smog, human toxicity, eco toxicity.

Sensitivity & Uncertainty Analysis

Conduct sensitivity per ISO 14044 Cl.4.5, test alternative scenarios, allocation methods, data quality, conduct uncertainty per Monte Carlo simulation with ecoinvent uncertainty data, align with EPD verification requirements.

LCA Report & EPD Preparation

Compile LCA report per ISO 14044, executive summary, goal & scope, LCI, LCIA, interpretation, limitations, prepare Environmental Product Declaration per ISO 14025 / EN 15804 (construction) / EN 15978 (building), align with PCR.

Hotspot Analysis & Improvement Roadmap

Identify environmental hotspots per life cycle stage and impact category, develop improvement roadmap, material substitution, energy efficiency, transport optimisation, end of life recycling, align with corporate sustainability and ESG reporting.

What the programme covers

Product Stewardship Programmes and Lifecycle in full scope

We define the goal and scope with an explicit choice between an attributional and a consequential approach
We define the functional unit and reference flow, whether that is kilograms of product, square metres of coverage or megajoules delivered
We set the system boundary as cradle to gate, cradle to grave or gate to gate to suit the purpose of the study
We collect lifecycle inventory data with primary and secondary tiering and characterise the uncertainty
We select the allocation method, whether physical, economic or mass balance, and test its sensitivity
We run the lifecycle impact assessment using ReCiPe 2016, EF 3.1 and IPCC GWP100 from AR6
We identify the hotspots that feed your eco design and substitution decisions
We author the EPD per ISO 14025 and EN 15804 and submit it through a Programme Operator such as EPD International, IBU or INIES
We arrange critical review per ISO 14071 for public claim or comparative assertion studies
We provide the Digital Product Passport data feed per EU ESPR for affected categories
