Life cycle assessment, often shortened to LCA, is a structured method for measuring the environmental impact of a product or process across its entire life, from the extraction of raw materials through manufacture, transport and use to final disposal or recycling. Rather than looking at a single factory gate, it follows the material and energy flows through every stage so that the full environmental picture becomes visible. Why it matters
Environmental claims are easy to make and hard to justify, and many well meaning decisions turn out to be counterproductive once the whole life is examined. - Impact assessment, which translates those flows into environmental effects such as climate change, acidification and resource depletion
- Interpretation, which draws conclusions, tests how robust they are and identifies the significant findings
The boundary choices made in the first phase shape everything that follows. A study can be drawn from cradle to grave, covering the whole life, or from cradle to gate, stopping at the factory exit, and comparing two studies is only fair when their boundaries match.
The standards
Life cycle assessment is governed by a pair of international standards that give it consistency and credibility. ISO 14040 sets out the principles and framework, describing the four phases and the overall philosophy of the method. ISO 14044 provides the detailed requirements and guidelines, covering how to define the goal and scope, how to build the inventory, how to carry out the impact assessment and how to report the results with the necessary transparency. Following these standards is what allows one study to be compared with another and what makes an environmental claim based on an LCA defensible. Related standards address specific applications such as carbon footprinting and environmental product declarations, but ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 remain the foundation.
Common pitfalls
The most damaging pitfall is choosing boundaries that flatter the answer, whether deliberately or not, so that an inconvenient stage of the life is left outside the study. Poor or missing data is another, since an LCA is only as trustworthy as the inventory beneath it, and generic database values can mislead when the real process differs. Comparing two products whose scopes or functional units do not match produces conclusions that look rigorous but are not. Focusing on a single impact such as carbon while ignoring water, toxicity or resource use can hide a burden shift from one problem to another. And an LCA presented as a precise number, rather than as a result with real uncertainty, invites more confidence than the method can honestly support.
