Behaviour Based Safety Observer Training
Observation and conversation that changes behaviour instead of collecting cards
Behaviour based safety programmes usually fail because observation becomes a quota and the conversation becomes a correction. This course trains observers to see what is actually happening, hold a conversation people will engage with, and feed conditions back into the system rather than blaming the individual.
This course sits alongside our Behaviour Based Safety consulting work, so what is taught is what we do.
Who should attend
Course content
Every module is taught with worked examples and exercises drawn from real plant, and adapted to your own process where the course runs in house.
What behaviour based safety can and cannot do
- Behaviour as the visible end of a system that produced it
- Why programmes that only count observations stop working
- The interaction with process safety, where the hazard is not visible
- Antecedent, behaviour and consequence analysis
Observing well
- Defining critical behaviours from your own incident and near miss data
- Watching a task without changing it by being there
- Recording what was seen rather than what was concluded
- Recognising conditions that make the safe way harder
The conversation
- Opening in a way that does not put the person on the defensive
- Asking rather than telling, and listening to the answer
- Discussing at risk behaviour without discipline entering the room
- Reinforcing safe behaviour so that it is noticed
Using the data
- Trending behaviours and identifying the conditions behind them
- Feeding system barriers back to those who can remove them
- Avoiding the metrics that produce card filling
- Keeping the programme credible over time
What you receive
- A critical behaviour inventory built from your own data
- An observation card designed for your operations
- Observer conversation guides
- Practical observation assessment and attendance record
What changes afterwards
- Observers hold conversations people are willing to have
- Observation data shows conditions rather than counting people
- System barriers get removed because they are visible
- The programme survives past the first year
