Ergonomics Assessment and PPE Programme Design

Fitting the task to the person, and selecting protection that actually protects

Combines musculoskeletal risk assessment with the design of a personal protective equipment programme. Both are areas where a control is commonly assumed effective without ever being verified, and both are covered here with the assessment tools and fit testing that provide evidence.

This course sits alongside our Ergonomics Assessment consulting work, so what is taught is what we do.

Who should attend

HSE professionals and occupational health staff
Supervisors responsible for task design and PPE issue
Engineers designing workstations and manual handling operations
Procurement staff selecting protective equipment

Course content

Every module is taught with worked examples and exercises drawn from real plant, and adapted to your own process where the course runs in house.

1

Musculoskeletal risk

  • Risk factors including force, posture, repetition and duration
  • Assessment tools including RULA, REBA and the manual handling assessment charts
  • Workstation and task redesign options
  • Early symptom reporting and its value
2

Manual handling and workplace design

  • Lifting assessment and the equations behind the guidance
  • Mechanical aids and when they get abandoned
  • Display screen and control room ergonomics
  • Participatory ergonomics with the people doing the task
3

PPE programme design

  • PPE as the last resort in the hierarchy and what that means in practice
  • Hazard assessment driving selection rather than catalogue habit
  • Compatibility between items worn together
  • Issue, maintenance, storage and replacement
4

Respiratory protection

  • Assigned protection factors and selecting for the exposure
  • Air purifying against supplied air and the cartridge change schedule
  • Fit testing, qualitative and quantitative, and why facial hair matters
  • Wearer training and the seal check performed every time

What you receive

  • Ergonomic assessment worksheets for the common tools
  • A PPE hazard assessment and selection matrix
  • A respiratory protection programme outline including fit test records
  • Assessment result and attendance record

What changes afterwards

  • Musculoskeletal risk is assessed with a repeatable tool
  • Tasks get redesigned rather than managed with training alone
  • PPE selection matches the assessed hazard and exposure level
  • Respirator wearers are fit tested, so the protection factor is real
