Fitness for Service Assessment

Deciding whether damaged equipment can keep running, and on what basis

When inspection finds damage, the question is whether the equipment can continue in service. This course covers the API 579 assessment levels, the flaw types they address, and the remaining life calculation that sets the next inspection date.

This course sits alongside our Corrosion and FFS Assessment consulting work, so what is taught is what we do.

Course content

Every module is taught with worked examples and exercises drawn from real plant, and adapted to your own process where the course runs in house.

  • Level 1, 2 and 3 assessment and choosing the appropriate level
  • Data requirements and the effect of measurement uncertainty
  • Acceptance criteria and remaining life

  • General and local metal loss
  • Pitting, blisters and laminations
  • Weld misalignment and shell distortion
  • Crack like flaws and the failure assessment diagram

  • Creep damage and high temperature operation
  • Fire damage assessment
  • Brittle fracture and minimum allowable temperature
  • Dent and gouge assessment for piping and pipelines

Decisions and documentation

  • Repair, rerate, monitor or replace
  • Setting the next inspection from the remaining life calculation
  • Documenting an assessment that will be reviewed years later
  • Interaction with the inspection code and the jurisdiction
