What this study delivers

HAZID
Studies

A HAZID is systematic about hazard source rather than deviation. It asks what could harm people, the environment, the asset or the business at all, which brings in the things a HAZOP will never raise: the control room inside a blast footprint, the flood that takes the substation, the contractor population during a turnaround, the residues left in a vessel at decommissioning. Because it works from a process description, an inventory and a plot plan rather than from a firm P&ID, it belongs at early design and front end engineering, ahead of the detailed design HAZOP, where its output defines the hazard set the design has to answer. It is not a concept stage exercise. Run against a block diagram with no inventory and no layout the team has nothing to bite on and produces hazards that could have been listed without them in the room. The same method also covers technology transfer, pilot and kilo scale before a first campaign, facility siting, and the construction, turnaround and decommissioning phases that no design stage study looks at.

Scope & Basis of Design

Define study boundaries, review P&IDs, PFDs, and process descriptions to establish the engineering basis.

Node / Team Preparation

Divide the system into logical nodes, brief the multidisciplinary team on guide words, deviations, and agenda.

Systematic Assessment

Apply structured methodology to identify deviations, causes, consequences, safeguards, and risk ranking for each node.

Consequence Evaluation

Evaluate credible worst case consequences and existing safeguard adequacy against applicable risk criteria.

Recommendations & Ranking

Develop prioritised action items, assign ownership, and classify by risk reduction potential.

Report & Close Out Support

Issue defensible report, support action close out tracking and revalidation at defined intervals.

We apply a guideword register covering chemical and reaction, containment, fire and explosion, layout and siting, external and natural, occupational and organisational, and construction and decommissioning

We hold the study where its findings can still move layout, separation, inventory and basis of safety
We chair independently of the design and of the operation of the system under review
We develop consequences to a stated receptor covering people, environment, asset and continuity, rather than defaulting to one
We credit only safeguards that exist at the time of the study, not those the project intends to install
We record the study element and the guideword behind every entry, so coverage can be demonstrated rather than asserted
We refer findings onward to HAZOP, LOPA, QRA, facility siting or calorimetry rather than closing them qualitatively
We cover construction, commissioning and decommissioning, which is the category most often dropped and the one no HAZOP recovers
