Noise, Ventilation and Thermal Stress Controls

Three physical agents, and the engineering controls that actually reduce exposure

Covers noise mapping and hearing conservation, local exhaust ventilation design and validation, and thermal stress assessment. The emphasis throughout is on engineering control performance and the testing that proves a control is working rather than merely installed.

This course sits alongside our LEV Design and Validation consulting work, so what is taught is what we do.

Who should attend

Industrial hygienists and HSE professionals
Engineers designing or maintaining ventilation systems
Occupational health staff running hearing conservation programmes
Facilities and maintenance staff responsible for control performance

Course content

Every module is taught with worked examples and exercises drawn from real plant, and adapted to your own process where the course runs in house.

1

Noise and hearing conservation

  • Sound level, dose and the exchange rate
  • Noise mapping technique and producing a usable contour map
  • Engineering control at source, path and receiver
  • Audiometry, hearing protection selection and attenuation derating
2

Local exhaust ventilation design

  • Capture velocity, hood design and the effect of distance
  • Duct sizing, transport velocity and system balance
  • Fan selection, air cleaning and discharge
  • Common design failures that leave a system incapable of capture
3

Ventilation validation

  • Commissioning tests and the benchmark record
  • Thorough examination and test at statutory frequency
  • Face velocity, static pressure and smoke or dust lamp testing
  • Diagnosing a system that has degraded
4

Thermal stress

  • Heat balance, WBGT and the predicted heat strain approach
  • Work rest regimes and acclimatisation
  • Cold stress and the assessment of cold work
  • Thermal comfort against thermal stress, kept distinct

What you receive

  • A noise survey and mapping protocol
  • LEV design calculation sheets and a validation test record
  • A thermal stress assessment worksheet
  • Assessment result and attendance record

What changes afterwards

  • Noise maps drive engineering control rather than only hearing protection
  • Ventilation systems are validated against a commissioning benchmark
  • Degraded LEV gets diagnosed before exposure rises
  • Thermal work regimes rest on measurement rather than on weather
